60 Minutes Tribute to the Fallen Soldiers in Iraq

Though I usually hate 60 minutes...and in particular Andy Rooney and the bombastic Mike Wallace; I did think they did a great Memorial Day Tribute for the fallen soldiers in Iraq (though they should have also included Afghanistan casualties).

If you missed it, they scrolled the pictures of the fallen soldiers while "Arpeggio for Strings" (theme from the movie "Platoon") in the background. No reading of names, no commentary....just the pictures and the haunting theme from "Platoon". It was a poignant tribute appropriate for Memorial Day.

No, I think the reading of names was a classless publicity stunt as opposed to the more subtle approach that CBS took IMHO.

1) It was announced and hyped a week in advance.
2) There was no paricular reason to do it other than for sensationalistic journalism.

Contrast with the 60 Minutes treatment:
1) Memorial Day is the appropriate time for a tribute to fallen soldiers.
2) Classy and subtle.

Honestly, seeing the faces of the fallen soldiers combined with an excellent choice of background music had a far greater impact...and left me misty-eyed.

so it doesn't have anything to do with the fact that fox news blasted the reading with names for a week?

Nope. ABC was the primary promoter. I guess the thing that left me irritated with the ABC treatment was that it wasn't a tribute or memorial...it was mean to "Shock and Awe."
